Checking Out the Tunes and Other Stuff In Ellicottville
By Robby & Sherm Wilkens

Wow the Ellicottville music scene will have a new addition on July 19th at Holiday Valley. Rumor has it that the Rotary Foundation for Youth will be hosting the Americana Folk Art & Music Fair. Part of the weekend includes an outdoor concert on the slopes at Yodeler Lodge on Sunday July 19th from noon to 7:00 PM. This family event will feature some great acts like Old Dawg and Country Jam with National recording artists The Doerfels and Canadian Juno award winner Tom Wilson.
Stayed tuned to this column for more information on this event which is part of the evolution of the Antique Farm Fair that will take place on Saturday July 18th in front of the town hall.

April and Mud Season are now upon us. Yet we still are skiing, riding and enjoying the last hurrahs of one of the best ski and riding seasons on record. How good is that?

As happens every year at this time, the number of music acts continues to fall. However, we still have the quality we have all come to expect. Starting today Friday April 3, 2009 through next Thursday we will have seven different bands playing nine concerts two DJ’s and one all weekend music sound system crunch.

We get started, like most weeks, tonight 9:00 PM with “Personable DJ John Barry” doing his Personality Show LIVE from Balloons Sound Booth. John’s tune selection, Tom’s fine eats and the general party atmosphere that is so prevalent in Balloons make Balloons a fun stop this Friday night.
Just south on Monroe Street at 9:30PM tonight The Double Diamond will have “Supertreat” playing their cover and original Classic to Southern to Country Rock. This really fun band is comprised of members from “A Touch of Grae” and “Southern Influence” two of the better Southern Rock bands that play in The Double Diamond. Another fun night of Music is about to happen in The Double Diamond.

The 10:00 PM Friday night “Rolling Stones” tribute concert preformed by “Hot Rocks” in The Depot still has a few $25.00 tickets left. They are available only at The Depot. Saturdays show is sold out. The Depot does two or three of these tribute concerts a year and “Hot Rocks” usually draws the most attention, because it is that good.

Both Friday and Saturday evenings Madigans will have what I call “Connors Crunch” going through Madigans Sound System. What this is; sometime after 9:00 PM on both nights Connor’s tune selection will be flowing from the really fine sound system in Madigans. The music will be geared to what is happening in The Party Central of Madigans creating what always is a fun time. Remember, this is a two-night event this weekend.

Moving to Saturday, “All Jacked Up” will be doing a 5:00 PM gig in Balloons. This Eighties Tribute band, which is a real tribute to Bon Jovi, puts on a very enjoyable show. The movements and the music of this band, bring back a bunch of memories of some really fun times. They create an all ages friendly party atmosphere that is consistent with what Balloons is all about. That being good food and fun music made for family enjoyment. Following “All Jacked Up” “THE PARTY MONSTER” Chatty Frank will continue the music festivities from Balloons Sound Booth. While Franks sense of humor is a bit over the edge, it is still very All-Ages friendly and very fun.
The first of the two later Saturday bands “The Joe Wagner Band” begins 9:00 PM in The Gin Mill. Joe, along with John Winston, is a Gin Mill and Ellicottville tradition of at least twenty-five years. Their music, as most of you know, is Cover Folk to Southern Rock done in what I call The Wagner and Winston Style. The music and excellent menu served till midnight at user-friendly prices makes The Gin Mill one of Ellicottville’s favorite places to spend a night out.

Around the corner on Monroe Street at 9:30 PM Saturday “West” will be playing in The Double Diamond. Really fun cover Classic Rock is what “West” does. This is the full band version of “Two Guys Drinking Beer”. The music selection for both groups is similar. What is unique, all of their tunes have “The Ron and Terry Twist” making some of the cover stuff they do sound almost original. Anyway, they are Double Diamond regulars and excellent listening.

With our first quiet Sunday since skiing started, it is probably appropriate to bring you the results of The Double Diamonds indoor Rail Jam Contest. Chris Perks was the winner of this unbelievable and fun event. Congrats and thanks to Chris, Brooks, all of the participants and Double Diamond Staff for a fun time last Sunday.

Monday also will be reasonably quiet, because “The Blue Mule Band” is still on vacation. Therefore “Pasta and Blue Grass” in The Gin Mill will take place without The Blue Grass. You still can have all the spaghetti, meatballs and garlic toast U can eat for $5.95. It will just be music-free.

MONDO MONDAY Ellicottville’s Only All Original Music Experience will take place 10:00 PM Monday in The Double Diamond. This Monday “Fritz The Kat” will be joining Mr. Darvazet, Lil Joey, Frankie Da Drums, and Basser Brandon with his trumpet. This will be another of the wonderful music experiences that happen on a regular basis in The Double Diamond.

Wednesday, Wings, Wagner and Winston will begin about 9:00 PM Wednesday in The Gin Mill. Joe and John will be doing a repeat of Saturday evening and that is a GOOD THING. Good eats, fun music and the antics of Mr. Chorny from behind the bar make The Gin Mill a Wednesday night must.

Thursday 7:00 PM, The Gin Mill ends the music week with “Kuk & Freddie” along with Lil Joey on spoons doing their version of “Rockin The Gin Mill” Mellow Rockin Roll is an under-description of what these guys are all about. Fun upbeat music with some of my favorite Grateful Dead tunes creates a fun party time every Thursday night in The Gin Mill.
