Checking Out the Tunes and Other Stuff In Ellicottville
By Robby & Sherm Wilkens

With February winding down and Ellicottville’s Mardi Gra weekend just two weeks away, we are about six weeks away from another fun season here in Ellicottville GOLF. It is also hard to believe it is still February, yet we are one hundred days into skiing and riding this season with a shot at one hundred forty days or more. WOW.

Now back to the music, starting today Friday February 27, 2009 through next Thursday, barring any surprises, we will have eighteen bands and four DJ’s playing in and around Ellicottville.
We get started 8:00 PM tonight in The Gin Mill with Nashville Country Singer and Songwriter, “Sean Patrick McGraw”. It’s been a year or more since Sean has played here in The Village of Ellicottville and this will be his only performance this year. His country music is mainly original and quite good. The fact he will have his whole band with him for this Gin Mill gig, will create an excellent show.

“Personable DJ John Barry” will be doing his Personality Thing LIVE from Balloons Sound Booth beginning about 9:00 PM tonight. His thing includes, but is not limited to, showing off his personality, spinning danceable tunes and generally creating the party and fun atmosphere that is so prevalent in Balloons.

At 9:30 PM tonight The Double Diamond will have “Southern Influence” performing their excellent Southern Rock show. If you enjoy everything from Skynyrd to The Outlaws, The Allman Brothers to Marshall Tucker and all the tunes in-between. You will really enjoy this band. With their fairly regular gigs here in The Double Diamond, they are fast becoming another of what I would call, my favorites.

Speaking of favorites, Madigans Upstairs Bar will have an Ellicottville favorite, “The Party Squad” in house around 10:00 PM tonight. This is the first of two Friday night Madigans gigs that “The Party Squad” will be doing. Those of you who are unable to get to Ellicottville on Thursday night will now be able to enjoy the fun this Party Rock Band creates in Madigans all winter long.
Saturday will also be a busy afternoon and evening with eight bands and two DJ’s. It all starts at 3:00 PM in two Holiday Valley locations. Labatt’s will be sponsoring “The Joe Wagner Band” in The East Bar of The Main Chalet at 3:00 PM Saturday. I believe it will be just Joe and John for this gig so we will get a preview of the wonderful Folk to Southern Rock this duo performs so well every Wednesday. At the same time Saturday, 3:00 PM, “Only Humen” will be in The Upstairs Bar of Yodeler Lodge. This is another of my favorite Classic Rock Cover Bands who used to play here quite often. They were last here at the end of January and put on an excellent show. While their music is all cover, it is done in a style unique to “Only Humen”.

Saturday at 3:30PM The Ellicottville Brewing Company will have “The Haybalers”, an authentic bluegrass band, in their front window. This guitar, banjo, bass and fiddle group really brings Mayville and The Blue Heron Bluegrass Festival home to Ellicottville. Later Saturday evening around 9:30 or 10:00 PM Saturday The Ellicottville Brewing Company will have a special performance by “Larry Nix” and his “New Orleans Jazz Band”. This is a three-piece band playing authentic Modern New Orleans Jazz. This will be a preview of what we may expect this summer for Jazz Fest.

Moving back to 5:00 PM Saturday, Balloons will have “The Scott Celani Band” doing their mainly original music show. Scott Celani, Matt Young, Ray Barry, Nik Georgakis and Carl Johnson are the members of this really fine alternative rock-sounding band. While much of their show is original they do a couple of Paul Simon tunes that are really excellent. Following “The Scott Celani Band” “Chatty Frank Watson” will keep the party going from Balloons Sound Booth. Party continuation with an all ages’ sense of humor is what Chatty Frank is all about and Balloons is where it all happens.

Reverting back to 5:00 PM Saturday once again, “Victims of Fate” will take the stage in The Double Diamond. Joey Gilroy and his group of High Energy Classic Rockers will be doing what they do so well, really fun, crowd involved, Classic Rock N Roll. Following “Victims of Fate” “Jam” will take over the music. This used to be a combination or The Dave Dorson Band and The Gilroy Brothers. The last time they were here they had some new faces. However their music was still the same excellent stuff they used to do. It is a rock, yet mellow, sound that is unique and fun listening. The Double Diamond continues as the home of this unique and fun stuff on a regular basis. There will be five music nights in The Double Diamond this week.

One more time back to 9:00 PM Saturday, The Gin Mill will have “Bad Influence” in house. This group was here for Blues Fest last January and plays what is described as Cattaraugus County Blues. It is a really fun yet unique sound that you just have to experience to appreciate. Check them out this Saturday in The Gin Mill.

The Final Saturday music will take place in Madigans Upstairs Bar with “Chance The DJ” spinning tunes and encouraging the party that always happens when he takes over Madigans Upstairs Bar.
Unwind Sunday will have only one music act and that will be “Ken Hardley” at 8:00 PM in The Double Diamond. Ken, like last week, will be a solo guitar act doing Classic Rock mellow stuff or if the audience wants more he can step it up a notch. Ken is a crowd pleaser that cares about his audience. So as you unwind from the weekend, try The Double Diamond for some fun music and really great eats this Sunday and every night of the week.

Now moving on to our regular weekly stuff. We begin with “Pasta and Blue Grass” 7:00 PM Monday in The Gin Mill. Like every week, $5.95 buys you all the spaghetti and garlic toast you can eat. Plus you get to partake of the wonderful Blue Grass tunes with Heart done up by Gail, Bernie and Doug “The Blue Mule Band”. They may even now have a regular bass player, like they had a week or so ago. They do both cover and original stuff, all with real class. This is a fun Gin Mill gig.
MONDO MONDAY 10:00 PM in The Double Diamond is next. This “EXPERIENCE” continues to be Ellicottville’s only “All Original Music Event” Jack Darvazet, Lil Joey, Basser Brandon, Frankie Da Drummer and maybe Fritz The Kat create a unique and fun music happening most every Monday in The Double Diamond.

After a quiet Tuesday, around 9:00 PM Wednesday The Gin Mill will host Ellicottville’s longest running music event, “Wednesday, Wings Wagner & Winston”. You all know the drill, really fine thirty-five cent wings, Joe and John’s Folk to Southern Rock acoustic music. All this coupled with the antics of Mr. Chorny behind the bar make The Gin Mill a must stop on Wednesday night.
Thursday finishes out the Music Week with three bands and one DJ. “Kuk and Freddie” accompanied by “Lil Joey” on spoons starts us out at 7:00 PM in The Gin Mill. Landshark Thursday, as we know it, features the acoustic, folk, yet very ROCKIN music of Kuk, Freddie & Lil Joey, Landshark Beer specials and a meatloaf dinner special are the ingredients for a really fun time in The Gin Mill this and every Thursday evening.

An hour later at 8:00 PM and around the corner on Monroe Street “2 Guys Drinking Beer” will be in The Double Diamond. Ron and Terry, the 2 Guys, create one of the best audience involved music acts we get to see here in Ellicottville. This acoustic duo takes requests and really encourages the audience to be part of the show. Fun and good music will abound this Thursday in The Double Diamond.

Just north on Monroe Street at 9:00 PM Thursday “Personable DJ John Barry” will be set up LIVE from Balloons Sound Booth. John and his Personality Show will be will be on display for Dancing or just Cocktailing and Conversation, this Thursday in Balloons.

Like every Thursday all winter, “The Party Squad” Buffalo’s Premier Party Rock Band” will begin around 10:00 PM in Madigans Upstairs Bar. Mark, Dave, Nelson and I believe Rick will make up this version of “The Party Squad”. There will be plenty of space for Partying, Dancing and excellent Classic Rock Music enjoyment. Dawn and all of Madigans Marvelous Staff will insure a good time.
One Final note “The Party Squad” will also be in Madigans next Friday March 6 at 10:00 PM for their second Thursday and Friday Combo gig. OK Shane/Bob?
