Checking Out the Tunes and Other Stuff In Ellicottville
By Robby & Sherm Wilkens

Here we are coming off the coldest few days of the winter so far. The snow guns at both Holimont and Holiday Valley are booming. We have had over twelve feet of natural snow plus the man made snow. THE SKIING IS EXCELLENT and so is the music. Starting today Friday January 16, 2009 through next Thursday we will have twelve bands, six DJ’s and two karaoke acts performing in around Ellicottville.

We get going tonight at 9:00 PM with “Personable DJ John Barry” doing his thing LIVE from Balloons Sound Booth. What his thing is FUN MUSIC designed around what his audience wishes to hear. Believe me John Barry and Balloons are an excellent, combination for a weekend kick off.
Just south on Monroe Street, The Double Diamond will have “Jam” beginning at 9:30 PM Friday. This is Dave Dorson’s full band. Dave has been playing around here for several years. With his full band the music will be Classic to Modern Rock done in the manor we have all come to expect from groups performing inThe Double Diamond.

There will be a DJ in the upstairs bar of Madigans beginning about 10:00 PM Friday. “Chance The DJ” will be spinning tunes that will get the crowd going as part of Madigans Friday Night FUNFEST.

Like most Saturdays during the winter, Saturday’s music begins 3:00 PM in Holiday Valley’s Upstairs Bar of Yodeler Lodge. “New York to LA” a four-piece Buffalo Classic Rock band will be performing. This group was here in Ellicottville at least twice last summer and from what I remember they are veterans of “Classic Rock”.

Also at 3:00 PM Saturday in The East Bar of Holiday Valley’s Main Chalet “Personable DJ John Barry” will be doing a repeat of Friday night. Which will include, but not limited to, showing off his personality, spinning tunes and selling stuff in a fun way. This is something that comes naturally with John. With Coleen on bar duty, good times will prevail.

The music in The Village begins at 4:00 PM with “Steve Dudley” doing his Cocktail Rock Gig in The Double Diamond. Steve is usually a one-man show doing cover Classic Rock. This is a new gig for The Double Diamond and will be the first of a two-band evening. After Steve Dudley, around 9:30 PM, one of my favorite Olean Bands “West” will take the stage. Ron and Terry, who are also “Two Guys Drinking Beer” and the driving force of “West”, put on an excellent Classic Rock show.
Back north on Monroe Street at 5:00 PM Saturday, Balloons will have a new one for me “The Deal” from their billing this is a four piece Buffalo Band consisting of keys, guitar, bass and drums. Their music inventory consists of Blues, Rock, Soul and Jazz. Again from conversation, I believe their music to be mellow and a perfect fit for Balloons Saturday Cocktail Hour and Fun Time. Following “The Deal”, “DJ Chatty Frank Watson” will keep the festivities going in his own, All-Ages Friendly, way from Balloons Sound Booth. Believe me Frank is a show well worth seeing.

Around the corner on Main Street at 9:00 PM Saturday, “The Joe Wagner Band” will be in The Gin Mill. The band will consist of Joe Wagner and friends. John Winston is a friend for sure, however, the rest of the cast is still up in the air. With Tracie and Jeff behind the bar and “The Joe Wagner Band” in house, The Gin Mill is in for a fun night.

The final Saturday gig, “Chance The DJ”, will be doing a repeat of The Friday Night FUNFEST beginning around 10:00 PM in Madigans Upstairs Bar. There will be plenty of dance floor space available, along with excellent beverage service to enhance Madigans fun upstairs party.
Unwind Sunday will begin 8:00 PM in The Double Diamond with “Touch of Grae”. This usually two-piece group sometimes will have three, yet they always put on a show that is difficult to beat. Their music is both cover and original Country to Southern Rock. Of the new groups for me, this one is fast becoming one of my favorites. The Double Diamond is home to these guys several times a month and that is wonderful.

Back on Main Street around 9:00 PM Sunday “Karaoke Ferris Abdo” will be in Madigans Downstairs Bar. So bring your best voice and list of favorite tunes and join The Madigans Karaoke Party.

We now move Monday and our regular music gigs. The Gin Mill starts the week with “Pasta and Blue Grass”. Again you know, All The Spaghetti & Garlic Toast U can eat for $5.95 plus The Blue Grass Music with Heart preformed by Gail, Doug and Bernie, “The Blue Mule Band”, make The Gin Mill the place to be on Monday evening.

MONDO MONDAY begins around 10:00 PM just around the corner in The Double Diamond. The usual cast of characters including Jack Darvacet, Lil Joey, Maybe Brandon, Frankie For Sure and Possibly Brian create Ellicottville’s only All Original Music What Ever. This experience is truly unique and The Double Diamond is where this EXPERIENCE takes place most every Monday.
Wednesday, Wings, Wagner and Winston an Ellicottville Gin Mill TWENTY-FIVE YEAR tradition is next, beginning around 9:00 PM. There isn’t much more to be said, Joe and John’s fun acoustic music, excellent thirty-five cent wings and Mr. Chorny behind the bar make The Gin Mill the place to be on Wednesday night.

Thursday at 7:00 PM, the final music night of the week, starts where Wednesday left off, in The Gin Mill, with “Kuk, Freddie and Lil Joey”. This is one fine mellow listening evening of music and just plain FUN and The Gin Mill is home to this wonderful gig every Wednesday.
Back on Monroe Street, I believe The Double Diamond will have a gig. As of this writing Brooks & Company had not booked anyone. Check them out around 8:30 PM Thursday for an update.
Starting at 9:00 PM Balloons will have “Personable DJ John Barry” doing first a Karaoke Show till around 11:00 PM then he will adjourn to Balloons Sound Booth to continue the fun. John is the original King of Karaoke and will create a good time.

The final gig of the week, as always all winter long, will begin 9:30 PM Thursday in Madigans with Buffalo’s Original Party Rock Band “The Party Squad”. Dave and Mark for sure, more than likely Nelson and probably Rick and or Joe make up this wonderful Classic Rock Band. I look forward to this show all summer and enjoy it all winter. If you enjoy really fine Classic Rock done to perfection check out “The Party Squad” in Madigans this coming Thursday.
