Ellicottville Library Adds More Leaves

The first thing you notice when entering the Ellicottville Memorial Library is the large tree in the gallery area which holds a great deal of meaning to many in our community. The tree was designed and created by artist Simon Griffis to signify the presence of the Ellicottville Rotary Club Foundation for Youth. The tree is endowed by a group of individuals called the Royal Acorn Society to provide a living, growing piece of art that children will add leaves to every year in an exciting arts-in-education project.

Last June, fifteen seniors from Ellicottville Central School participated in this art program. Not only did they design their own leaf, they were able to travel to the Griffis Studio at the Essex Arts Center to make their leaf. Students made a template and used a plasma cutter to cut the metal leaf and also cut the stained glass for the center portion of the leaf.

On January 10th the students came to the library to select a spot to permanently hang their leaf. We hope that these students will come back to see the tree change throughout the years as more and more leaves are added. Maybe some will even bring their own children back someday to see the tree and their leaf. It is comforting to know that years from now the tree will stand as a reminder of what we are here for: to provide for growth, to enjoy the change, and to admire the strength and support through arts, education and opportunity for this community.
